Interactive Environments

A small post about the Interactive Environments exhibit at my alma mater. I had to be in Rotterdam anyway that day so I decided to drop by.

There’s some confusion at Delft Science Center whether the exhibit is really open to the public, but it isn’t locked, so just head there and take the first door on your right. Maybe because of the confusion, the machines aren’t turned on, so it’s a rather static display of interactive environments.

Back where I began

Last Sunday we did a big haul and carried most of our stuff over to the new place in Amsterdam. Now we’re almost done with the tedious process of making sure the basics are taken care of, sorting through stuff, eliminating duplicates.

Half A Life Apart

My story in Delft had been finished for a while now. Loads of friends but also a lot of dead ends. Being in Amsterdam gives a fresh perspective and breathing space.

The only thing is, I don’t usually mind giving up comfort, but the comfiness of ten year’s worth of accrued social contacts, friends, loose acquintainces, class mates, colleagues and the likes is a real loss. I hope to be able to build something similar quickly over here (and lose that again as well).

So this is new beginnings in familiar places with lots of fun.

Kyteman and his Hip Hop Orchestar

For my international audience; if you’ve been living in the Netherlands you could not have missed this.

Yesterday night we saw a live gig here in Delft by Kyteman (myspace) and his hip-hop orchestra and we stood agape with wonder. This guy is a recent musical sensation in the Netherlands and if you can catch a show by him run to it!

Kyteman is a hip-hop artist/conductor with a trumpet who leads a 21 piece orchestar with a full brass section, a string section and a host of M.C.s. A definite mashup formation with hip-hop, funky and blues sounds. I write orchestar because it is reminiscent even of more balkan influences like Bregović and Beirut. The sound they produce is rich and dynamic and the performances spectacular in their grandeur.

The music is awesome, but the live gig is where it’s at. 3voor12 made a composition of audience recordings at Pinkpop to give you an idea of the explosion.

Art in the public space

I started the week out nicely with a lunch lecture from Kie Ellens about art in the public space. It took me some time to properly code it, but it is online finally (and mostly in English):

The architectural student association Stylos is celebrating a lustrum this week, so there were lunch lectures every day, but unfortunately I could only attend the one.

Beers at Stagioni

As can be read in this thread we are holding the next Open Beer Delft at our coworking office next to the Delft Central train station: Studio 4 Stagioni.

After some months of silence we heard some signals from the community that a new iteration of the event might be appreciated. A lot of stuff has happened, people and projects are moving on and catching up while drinking a beer could be a nice way to spend part of a Friday
afternoon.

So announcing the next iteration of Open Beer Delft, the VrijMiBo for
entrepeneurial and freelance Delft. Beers on us at our office Studio 4 Stagioni
Friday November 14th, 17:00 – 19:00
Hooikade 2, Delft

Come one, come all and invite those that may not be aware of this
event. A quick reply to confirm, so we know how many people to
expect, would be appreciated.

Hope to see you guys here, for a chat and a beer.

Pollerbeleid Delft

Night Store

My friendly neighborhood night store will gladly give me a plastic bag for every item of shopping I buy from them. This is pretty thoughtful and at the same time also pretty short-sighted.
Now there seem to be some places in the world that have banned plastic bags though I’m not sure which ones. It is a pretty contentious issue. It seems to be difficult or something but it’s not exactly clear why that is. We’re one of the technically most advanced societies in the world and we can’t live without plastic bags?

I wasn’t very hungry so instead of my regular döner I got some green pistachio baklava. This stuff is so ridiculously delicious it explodes into pure sugar and pistachio in your mouth and it fills you up pretty fast. I don’t get why you would buy mass-produced candy from the supermarket. If you want to get fat, why not get fat eating good stuff?

Now if  only I could find a place around here that sells künefe, things would get really crazy.
