They start talking about how offline people are usually disadvantaged in some way, but that can’t be the reason because you can get online with a prepaid plan and a second hand Android phone for a couple of bucks these days. Hearing the people coming to the digital support hotline talk, many of them do not see the point of or any need to be online. And that is a different problem altogether.

One of the reasons mentioned “a lot of negative coverage of the internet in the media” tallies with my own assessment. German journalists, politicians and lawyers have done their best to scare the living daylights out of people here1 and dissuade them from the internet and new developments in general. The damage done is significant but this broken mess is the society people here want to live in.

My crank explanation for why they did that is because Axel Springer went to California and saw that they were infinitely behind when it comes to online and needed time to catch up. Cue lots of BILD headlines about the “dangers of the digital” and you can delay developments in a country that’s already behind. ↩︎

Woodwalkers 2 is an entertaining enough kids movie. The conceit of beastwalkers (human/animal shapeshifters) is worth exploring despite the disbelief around diet and clothing logistics it requires. The special effects are very weak but not to the point that it makes the movie unwatchable.

The movie pretends to have representation but both the black supporting characters are done dirty. The black girl Lou seems to be the Carag’s girlfriend in the beginning but then disappears for half the movie while he gets it on with a wolf girl Tikaani. The black boy Brandon is relegated to such a passive role that another character remarks that buffalos do nothing but eat and shit.

From a theory of change point of view I would say the movie is commendable. It teaches kids that standing in a field with only the power of your convictions against men with machines and guns does not achieve very much. The main antagonist Andrew Milling demonstrates that it’s preferable to acquire political power by any means and then use that power to drive through your will.

Listening to him talk to German notables, it becomes clear that he’s not the sharpest knife in the block. There is no spark or wit in either of the two episodes I listened to. His questions are superficial and unoriginal. I don’t understand why anybody would listen to this.

Let’s talk about the episode with Veronika Grimm. It goes entirely as expected. Ronzheimer gives Grimm a bunch of easy passes that allow her to spout the talking points the German government has been pushing about the economy.

Grimm and the government want everybody to work more for less money. The threat is that if we don’t, the economy will become even more uncompetitive than it already is.

We’ve heard them rant against people who are working part-time. Nothing is going to change because of these rants. It would be better to examine why people need to work part-time and try to figure out solutions. The vast productivity and effectiveness gaps present in almost every German company and institution need to be fixed by investment, not papered over by pushing people to work more hours.

Doing any of these of course requires a politics based on changing something. That’s not something this German government can do.

But what takes the cake is Grimm also suggesting to roll back the “telephone sick note” to increase productivity in Germany. Me dragging myself to the doctor’s office on Monday morning and waiting three hours to get a piece of paper is really going to make the country more productive.

With thinking like this we’ll never get a better economy. In the Netherlands sick notes do not exist and working part-time is incredibly common. Last I checked they are doing better than Germany on all fronts.

Most people don’t know that anybody here can ask to work part-time and if the company does not have a good reason to refuse it, they can’t.

There are a number of issues with this idea:

For as long as I’ve worked in Germany I don’t think I’ve ever seen another man work part-time. In effect this would be abolishing a right that is only exercised by women which makes this sexist, even by the CDU’s standards.

Given the discouraged labor participation of women in Germany in general and them being the only ones using this, it’s fair to say that working part-time is rare in Germany. That makes the change here relatively inconsequential.

That majority of people who did work full-time up until now, have hardly created the economic output and innovation to put Germany in a competitive position. That makes you think part-time is not the real issue at hand here.

Like we’re used to, another bit of ‘window dressing’ politics from the CDU without real reason or consequence.

(Full disclosure I work part-time in my current job and have worked part-time in the two jobs before that as well.)

For historic reasons my bank in Germany is the GLS Bank, an alternative and esoteric bank that pretends it’s good. Their statement after the fact was the following:

Von Sammstag bis Montagmittag lag eine Störung vor, sodass Bankkarten als auch Kreditkarten nicht funktionierten.

This is quite staggering. It means they had a disruption to all card payments from Saturday until Monday afternoon.

I don’t consider a three day disruption to be acceptable for any service, but especially in banking there are supposed to be very stringent compliance requirements around uptime that should make something like this impossible.

The GLS does not ship any new features like ever, if they also can’t keep what they have stable, then there is no point.

I was curious and the good custom in our industry is to disclose details of the incident as well as about the remediation you undertook and will still do to make sure this does not happen again.

Their response to my request was:

Bitte haben Sie Verständnis dafür, dass wir zu bankinternen Störungen keine Details mitteilen.
Sie können gewiss sein, dass wir die Ursachen ermitteln und präventiv arbeiten.

That they are a backward and not particularly customer friendly organization is something that’s not news to me. And I definitely do not trust that they will track down the root causes and prevent them from happening again.

The only question is whether there are any other German banks that are any better than this.

The diagnosis here about the unique German problem with Datenschutz is mostly correct. Of course other European countries manage to have privacy without working themselves in a huff around Datenschutz. How could that be?

The causes mentioned are correct:

There are too many people working in law and compliance in Germany who do nothing but create paper and slow everything down. Lots of people’s livelihoods depend on absurd regulations being there.

The chilling effect around these regulations has contributed to a low risk appetite and a culture where problems are maintained instead of being solved.

But the real reason of course why things are like this here but not elsewhere is culture. It’s always culture.

Also meine Tipps:

Of course a company like Gematik can’t update algorithms and keys on such a widespread heterogenous system. This is a competency that is impossible to organise except at the largest scales and even then companies like Microsoft will routinely leak their root keys.

The ‘hackers’ who made this presentation also can’t make something better than this and their culture is what led us to this point in the first place. It’s the same story with the German digital ID card which nobody uses.

The recipe is simple:

Demand absurd levels of security for threat models that are outlandish and paranoid

Have those demands complicate your architecture with security measures that look good but are impossible to maintain

Reap the exploits that you can run against that architecture and score publicity

<repeat>

It’s a great way to make sure that everybody loses in the German IT landscape.

Solution: Simplify the architecture to a server model with a normal 2FA login and keep that server secure. Done.

I cycle past this street every day and I don’t think it’s a bad change. Unfortunately, they’ve done it in such a bad way that it’ll poison every person who hears about it against the very concept of government:

They failed to notify the people living there until after the change had already passed (incompetent!).

They decided to only rename part of the street (insane!).

Renaming part of the street forces the street numbers to be re-allocated (insane!).

„Im Nachhinein ist das eine gute Frage“, sagt Werner Heck von der Bezirksverordnetenversammlung (BVV) Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg.

Werner Heck’s statements are a good argument here for abolishing the entire concept of the BVV. If they couldn’t even be bothered to check-in on the implementation of one of their more material and prestigious measures, then what are they good for?

This makes it clear that it is not uncommon for the Berlin administration to do things without talking to other departments. This is the way you would work, if you’re mentally entirely dead and checked out.

This sounds ‘good’ to the average German but it will in no way prevent these kind of problems from happening because the issue is not one of process or tactics, but one of culture.

All of these were unforced errors and you can ask yourself maybe they were actually intended to make a mockery of the entire process by a civil service that is politically opposed or too lazy to do any real work.

Much good that did do if you see the continued rise of that sentiment and this Green government all but enabling right-wing parties with their politics of austerity.

I rescinded my Green Party membership a couple of months ago because of irreconcilable disagreements with their politics. Also because I don’t think they’re effective even at the things they want to do. That move put me way ahead of the Green youth wings many of whom recently exited the party for similar reasons and with a lot of fanfare.

A lot of my beef with the Greens (though by no means all of it) is for their hypocrisy when it comes to the Palestine question.

I don’t really have a stake in the Israel-Palestine conflict. I know more Israelis than Palestinians and get along with them fine. I’m opposed against theocratic movements and governments of all backgrounds. Still, in this conflict it is obviously apparent what is right and what is wrong and it has been obvious for decades.

This topic is too big to treat in whole and I hope there will be hundreds of reckonings of the past year in German politics at some point. I’ll just post my receipts and explain why they made the Green Party morally repugnant to me.

I saw Özdemir in this video with many other high ranking German politicians quote Golda Meir saying: “Peace will come when the Arabs will love their children more than they hate us.” This is a vile bit of racism that should be unacceptable but to which nobody batted an eye back then.

Habeck, the only functional politician in the German government, posted this sermon relatively quickly after the attacks.
Party Membership

I don’t think party membership is a thing for most people. There are power dynamics at play which are the same in the Greens as they are everywhere else. In every party there are two classes of members:

Career politicians who have decades of experience and relationships in the party. They run everything.

Ordinary members who are there to volunteer at the local levels and support the party materially with their time or money.

These two classes have almost no interaction with each other. The mechanisms of inner party democracy (and pretty much any functional organisation) are setup in such a way that ordinary members can’t bother the people doing the “actual work”.

So what is the point of being a member if you don’t have time or money to give?

I would answer that for me there is no point in party membership. I don’t get anything out of it. I may keep voting for the Greens (for lack of better alternatives) and support them in one way or another, but I don’t need to be a member to do either of those things.

Maybe being a party member will be worth it for others who have more to give or who stand to get more out of it. That is a calculation that everybody needs to make for themselves.

There are very few people here who have the desire and skills to be able to look beyond the borders, beyond the Tellerrand, and who feel that what the German state and establishment press and media serve you is simply not good enough. I’d be hard pressed to suggest anything at the same level as what Michael Seemann here and any German interested in the intersection of technology and politics would be well served to read this newsletter.

You know, countries could have promoted STEM education as a pursuit decades ago but given the state of things, nothing is getting done in technology without people from outside of Europe. Let’s see whether we make the smart choice this time round, or whether we’ll see countries ‘cutting their nose to spite their face’ as the saying goes.

The main issue here is that a purchase like this (hardware firewalls!) fits in the rampant fear based culture around digital technology here where schools have their own IT (which they can’t deploy or manage) and everything needs to be absolutely secure. The net result of that way of thinking is of course that nothing is even slightly secure.

/dingen/2022/01/anthroposophy-and-ecofascism/

What’s also quite poignant are the fascist foundations of the ecological movement in Germany. It’s not just fascist but in the weird post-war political space here every type of idiocy is pretty much represented.

Petra Kelly is essential to understand why the Greens are so so opposed to nuclear energy. She got together with an officer of the German army who was used by the Stasi (as part of the Generals for Peace) to argue for disarmament. He eventually shot her and himself to death.

https://www.environmentandsociety.org/arcadia/petra-kelly-and-transnational-roots-green-politics

It’s a good example of how anything peace movement related here was a ploy by the Russians not to get their ass kicked (and still is).

And here’s a historical treatment of all the ecofascist tendencies that tried to be part of the ecological movement in post-nazi Germany. Some of them got disillusioned and rebuked by the party’s tendency towards eco-socialism, but others managed to latch on.

https://social-ecology.org/wp/1992/01/left-green-perspectives-27/

The absurd cast of characters in both of these stories are a clear testament for how pretty much everybody in German society after the war was damaged goods.

Germany has a system of income dependent fines called Tagessätze. These are meant to make punishments more equitable by making people who make more money pay more.

It turns out (and I’m sure very few people are aware of this) that courts do not get access to tax records to determine the fine base. They take a guess at the income and most of the time, they guess too low.
