This has a shorter runtime than the movie because a lot of fluff is cut out and we are only left with a very summary story. That is a good choice and I can’t say the movie suffers from it very much even though this is version is very much its own thing (i.e. not a narrative movie).

Ishibashi-san is on stage and directs the musical soundtrack while occasionally accompanying the movie on her flute. From the distance it was very hard to tell what she was doing or even what sounds she was producing on top of the soundtrack.

Musically it’s a lot of the soundscapes with the main theme interspersed at various key junctures. We don’t get to learn anything more about the ending.

Both of them put on their helmets of their own accord and jumped into the Christiania as soon as we got there. It was clear that they had a destination in mind. They then tried to describe to me which playground they wanted to go to and how to get there lacking most of the vocabulary to do so. Extremely adorable and no doubt in my mind that they’ll be able to describe their wishes here pretty soon as well.

On the way back both kids were singing something in the cargobike while I in the back was trying to vocalize a rendition of Lemon Tree from very distant memory. We should definitely install a sound system in the bike.

Turkish MC XiR has a new trap song out with the noteworthy title Angela Merkel. There is even somebody with a Merkel mask in the video.

The video has a quick and dirty German subtitle bundled with it which you can turn on and read.

In the spirit of international relations, I will translate to English the hook of the song (lyrics on Genius). The rest of the song is either not that interesting or I’m missing out on a lot of inside baseball. Either way, I won’t try it.

I can’t make much more of it other than that the mythologization of Angela Merkel continues. I’m curious what the German foreign office thinks about that.

Kraftwerk Mitte is a disused power plant in the middle (Mitte) of the city that is now a club venue and host to a variety of events. The most striking features of it are large open spaces and lots of exposed concrete everywhere.

Max Richter I didn’t know before but I quickly confirmed that I would agree with his music. It had been one of my desires to attend a classical music concert while lying down being able to doze in and out of sleep as your mind and body dictate. Classical concerts tend to be long and uncomfortable affairs.

I hadn’t imagined I would get the chance to do this during an 8 hour overnight concert.

The music is very smooth to listen to and it is a kind of music that Richter is known for (read this interview). I’m listening to From Sleep now as I write this. I listened to the first couple of hours and then fell into a fitful sleep until I woke up again at 07:30 to catch the end.

Sleeping on stretcher beds at a power station 15 minutes cycling away from home with a couple of hundred other people was a strange experience. It was for one one of the lowest key camping trips I have ever undertaken. Though I’m used to the occasional communal sleeping arrangement, those are totally different situations. Berlin’s club spaces facilitate experiences in between the intimate and transgressive but even then this is an odd one out.

I probably also wasn’t the only person in the room who considered it wry that we would pay €48 to sleep in circumstances similar to thousands of others in Germany right now.

I’m still not sure what to make of the event but it is a memorable experience that will stay with me for a while like a dream but more powerful.

The Komische Oper is a ten minute bike ride from my house and you can get a discounted ticket with some mild visual obstruction for €18. This makes it a fairly ideal way to spend a Sunday in Berlin which otherwise can be fairly quiet (stores aren’t open, most places close at five or six).

I’m not an expert on opera but I enjoyed the staging and the performances a lot. The Komische Oper’s productions can look a bit kitschy but this was all fairly in line. I can’t share anything from the play thanks to an extremely stringent copyright policy, so below is a recording of one of the major songs by the Met.

After having severed my relation with theater, opera is something that is still fun and interesting to me. What is especially interesting about opera is that despite it fielding some of the biggest budget stage productions we have, it allows a lot of space for weird things. That is not just the case for this opéra fantastique but reading the plot of any opera will leave you amazed at how cheesy it is.

The fact that opera is so open to even the dumbest of stories and at the same times is a spectacular confluence of the multimedia arts would indicate that it has a grand future. Unfortunately the average age of the attendees indicates that that is not the case yet.

I was cycling through Berlin when at a traffic light a car full of women next to me was bouncing to some heavy beats. The lyric I caught through the open window was “Sie klatschen aneinander bei der Double Penetration”. That of course piqued my interest.

The story does not end well. I overtook them at the next traffic light and I was sure that they would not appreciate my vehicular cycling. Indeed they didn’t and they honked at me when they overtook (a particularly bad habit of Berlin drivers). In the spur of the moment I shouted the F-word back at them and I didn’t expect it but that did shut them up.

After that incident I listened to a bunch of K.I.Z. and found their lyrics to be funny and smart. Their general modus operandi seems to be lots of clowning and ironizing topics by taking them to their utter extremes.

A great example of this is the song “Ich bin Adolf Hitler”. I actually had to look up whether K.I.Z. were nazis or not. Irony in Germany can be difficult to gauge. They also had a song about Jörg Haider called Straight outta Kärnten. I was on holiday in Kärnten this summer blissfully unaware of its dubious reputation.

K.I.Z. is a breath of fresh air in German popular culture. It does not take itself or anything particularly seriously and that is something Germany could use a great deal more of.

The artistic mandate of the evening bordered a bit on the odd. 1000 Robota is more or less a lunatic act part of the melodramatic German singer-songwriter movement. Pantha du Prince & The Bell Laboratory were forced to interpret Terry Riley’s in C as part of the program. Of course they said it was a great inspiration to them and they did quite a good job of it. After the official part of the program they started making some real music and the entire Volksbühne got to its feet ¹. I asked myself: ‘What the fuck were we doing up until this point?’

I realize that the evening wasn’t supposed to be a club night, but if the unofficial part of the program is so much more vibrant that should be a clear signal.

Reden tot blijdschap dus, maar nog steeds vreemd waarom ze niet gewoon één MP3-stream ¹ hebben opgezet die volgens mij door alle drie die players ² probleemloos kan worden afgespeeld.

Update: Blijkbaar is dit een hele populaire post en ik luister redelijk wat radio via iTunes. Hoe je dat doet is als volgt, onder Advanced staat een optie Open Audio Stream (Command-U) en daar kun je de URL van een stream in plakken. Ik werd vanochtend gebeld voor Radio 1 vanwege het nieuws dat Fred Teeven het downloadverbod wil doorzetten. Nu is een paar minuten op de radio natuurlijk te kort om een genuanceerd argument neer te zetten, dus hier een kleine uitbreiding:

Downloaden is nu niet illegaal. Teeven wil downloaders ook niet vervolgen maar het criminaliseren van downloaden is nodig om mensen die bestanden aanbieden (en links naar bestanden verzamelen) beter aan te kunnen pakken dan nu gebeurt.

Dit verbod staat al een hele tijd op de wensenlijst van de auteursrechtenlobby die de deur bij onze bewindvoerders platloopt. Met dit kabinet hebben ze eindelijk beet. Consumenten-organisaties hebben niet alleen geen vergelijkbare vertegenwoordiging, maar ze worden zelfs actief geweerd door het kabinet.

Het is een beetje onzinnig om downloaden te verbieden als er om films te kijken geen goede legale alternatieven zijn (de noodzaak daarvoor stond in een versie van dit voorstel). Dan moeten zelfs mensen die geld wí­llen betalen, het wel illegaal halen. Mensen met meer tijd dan geld downloaden, mensen met meer geld dan tijd doen dat liever niet als het makkelijk legaal kan.

Teeven wil een internetfilter instellen om dat soort aanbiedende sites in zijn geheel van het internet te halen. Dit soort filters werken ook niet. Mensen die eromheen willen lukt het toch wel. Maar nog een stap verder: dit soort filters worden ook gebruikt in China, Iran en andere onderdrukkende regimes (daar is onze regering ook tegen). Maar hier ook zullen zulke filters slecht te controleren zijn en vrijwel zeker voor meer doeleinden worden gebruikt dan waar ze eerst voor waren bedoeld (‘als we ze toch hebben…’).

Maar het belangrijkste punt:

Copyright is een monopolie op het uitbaten van auteursrechtelijk materiaal voor de producent. Dit monopolie wordt verstrekt omdat het idee is dat mensen meer werk produceren als ze een vergoeding krijgen.

Dat heeft enige tijd gewerkt (vanaf midden 20e eeuw tot en met de jaren 90) maar het uitgangspunt is nu niet meer geldig.

Vijftien jaar downloaden van muziek heeft laten zien dat de creatie van muziek niet op zijn gat ligt. Er is zelfs meer en betere muziek makkelijker toegankelijk dan ooit tevoren. Voor de consument is dit prima en er zijn ook weinig (nieuwe) muzikanten die klagen over deze gang van zaken. De enigen die klagen zijn oude muzikanten die dachten te kunnen rentenieren en platenmaatschappijen die hun relevantie kwijt zijn.

Er zijn talloze studies die aantonen dat de opgerekte copyright termijn helemaal niet zorgt voor meer nieuw werk. Het internet heeft ook de distributie, creatie, het remixen en de financiering van media en cultuur zodanig veranderd dat de oude modellen niet meer werken. Daarom is de hele premisse van copyright aan herzien toe.

Verder: dieper en juridischer bij 3voor12. Maar een heffing op elke internetverbinding die op troebele wijze herverdeeld wordt onder auteursrechthebbenden is ook bijzonder slecht en marktverpestend. Laten we niet die kant op gaan.

Ook: Hier een sterke reactie op Tweakers wat er allemaal nog meer mis is met dit voorstel.

I’m quite proud to have been part of the local systems integration crew of Urbanode with the steps we made on controlling environments using web technology. The movie above shows my laptop connected to a lighting panel in the Melkweg running an OLAD (Open Lighting Architecture) server talking ARTNET/ DMX to talk with the panel and the urbsville NodeJS application that exposes the available lights as an interface on a webpage for the Android phone.

So the flow is as follows:

• Android phone (or other), goes to a webpage on the local network
• The webpage is served by urbsville using NodeJS which means everything is live and can be kept consistent across clients
• Any device setting is mirrored using an internal mapping by updating the DMX values of the corresponding device on the ARTNET output
• OLAD sends its current state to the lighting panel
• The lighting panel updates (merges) the values into its universe and when they are hooked up the lights change their behaviour —or colour in this case— accordingly.

So starting with colours and intensities of lights, the next step is being able to hookup arbitrary properties of any kind of device and making it all work solidly so application developers, lighting specialists and game designers can get ahold of this technology.

A lot of this is still quite abstract and the technology setup is pretty cutting edge but this is an essential building block for moving forward. Being able to control physical devices using Javascript has already been possible as has service discovery in spaces (tons of demos by Philips, Sun and the likes). Urbanode breaks out of the local application cul-de-sac and exposes everything straight to the web using the web’s most native control language: Javascript. This is a big step in totally commoditizing device control and normalizing and expanding the scale of operation.

This has been blogged about already by the Urbanode team “Prototypes for discoverable services in public space”, “Alpha Release: Urbanode” and picked up by Bruce Sterling on Wired. I would encourage you to go to github and clone the code and tell us what you think.

Het mag hier al duidelijk zijn dat ik een fan ben van Nasr. Als je die anderhalf uur luistert, word je het waarschijnlijk ook. Een prettige aanklacht tegen de huidige stand van zaken in Nederland, niet populair maar wel goed onderbouwd. Alleen ben ik bang dat hij er geen nieuw publiek mee bereikt. Zolang wij zó in de minderheid zijn kunnen we zeggen wat we willen maar denk ik niet dat we er iets mee bereiken.

Zijn prangendste aanklacht zoals ook in het manifest van Terschelling te lezen valt is dat ons nieuwe kabinet alles wat geen direct nut heeft wil afschaffen, alles wat ons onderscheidt van de dieren.

The functionality we envision helps ad-hoc groups of people who find themselves in the same location/venue/party to compare their music tastes and see where the overlaps and where the holes are. The table would be a turn-taking jukebox with tangible interactions and nice visuals for all users and spectators.

Easier said than done, of course. We spent a great part of the week and most of the weekend hacking, building, eating, drinking coffee, staying up to the wee hours, literally stabbing ourselves with scalpels, cursing a great deal and drinking whisky to get the thing together, when finally on Sunday in the last hour before the presentation we managed to integrate everything to the level that we could shoot a demo video.

What we built was just an initial step on the way to the jukebox I described above, but it seemed to look promising enough to net us the first prize from last.fm at Music Hackday for which we were very happy.

We like to thank last.fm, the organizers and the participants of Music Hackday. It was a great event and for us it was a great occasion to finally get this project started.

We will develop the table further and build out the functionality we had envisioned to make it a real locus for social music discovery. It should be hanging in one of our studios soon, so get in touch and visit if you want to try it out.

Ik heb het hier weleens gehad over de films van Fatih Akin, “Gegen die Wand” en “Cossing the Bridge”. Die films én hun soundtracks beschouw ik als bekend terrein maar misschien is het later leuk om daar wat dieper op in te gaan.

Vandaag gaat het over MFÖ (afkorting van Mazhar-Fuat-Özkan, officiële site). Ik kwam deze band voor het eerst tegen via een blogpost uit Ben Hammersley’s reis door Turkije ¹, en wel met deze fanclip op YouTube:

Een lekker kazige clip met een ‘coole’ dude maar de toffe sound nodigt uit om meer te zoeken op YouTube.

Een probleem is er wel als je een band als MFÖ tegenkomt in 2007. Dit zijn ondertussen relatief oude mannen maar instituten van de Turkse popmuziek. Wikipedia heeft 13 albums staan sinds 1984. Daar kom ik nu even in vallen zonder veel benul van de Turkse popgeschiedenis of de context waarin deze muziek is uitgebracht. Ik doe het wel met mijn gevoel voor wat leuke muziek is (deze jongen op Last.fm behandelt ook MFÖ).

Ik zoek nog naar de bittorrent link voor de hele discografie ³ en als ik die allemaal geluisterd heb ⁴, kom ik er wel op terug.

Heel erg mooie clip en een aardig sentimenteel nummer. Het ‘ik sta miden in’ heeft betrekking op de regen en de weg, metaforen voor het leven en haar beproevingen.

Het is sentimenteel op het melodramatische af, maar dat is Turkse cultuur eigen. Het is fijne muziek, zeker als je de taal spreekt. Ik ben benieuwd hoe niet-Turken het ervaren.

After your fourth time attending such a great and small conference as Reboot, it becomes familiar like a reunion. This year’s action theme meaned the two days were completely packed. There was so much to do and so much going on that the first day was over already before you knew it.

The one thing that struck me as being odd was the fact that many speakers on the large stage weren’t asked any questions (I had one or two for Richard Falkvinge). If anything, Reboot does not strike me as an event where one person can rain down the gospel unquestioned. So for a next time more interactive maybe even adversarial formats may be nice.

It was a great event and a lot of fun cruising around like a local on the Yahoo! bike and crashing at Mark’s place with Anne (his writeup). The opening talk by Matt was great (as always) and the Bruce Sterling’s closing talk was also fantastic ¹. Ton has a great writeup.

Thuis kwam ik erachter hoe klassiek dit muziekstuk is maar ik kon er bijna niks van vinden op Spotify. Took a stroll around the house and happened upon some contemporary dance (more).

Yesterday night we saw a live gig here in Delft by Kyteman (myspace) and his hip-hop orchestra and we stood agape with wonder. This guy is a recent musical sensation in the Netherlands and if you can catch a show by him run to it!

Kyteman is a hip-hop artist/conductor with a trumpet who leads a 21 piece orchestar with a full brass section, a string section and a host of M.C.s. A definite mashup formation with hip-hop, funky and blues sounds. I write orchestar because it is reminiscent even of more balkan influences like Bregović and Beirut ¹. The sound they produce is rich and dynamic and the performances spectacular in their grandeur.

The music is awesome, but the live gig is where it’s at. 3voor12 made a composition of audience recordings at Pinkpop to give you an idea of the explosion.

Ik zou willen dat er meer van dat soort verdedigers van onze collectieve cultuur bestonden. Recent is de copyright termijn in Europa weer opgerekt en onze cultuur weer een stukje verder uitgehold voor de zelfverrijking van bemiddelende instanties (zie het videofragment hieronder).

Op dit soort momenten is het handig om even na te gaan waarom een wet is ingesteld en of die geest van de wet nog steeds gediend wordt door de huidige praktijk. Het concept van auteursrecht is in tegenstelling tot wat mensen denken niet bedacht als oudedagsvoorziening voor platenbazen.

Het oorspronkelijke idee was dat een tijdelijk monopolie op de exploitatie van een werk door de auteur, een stimulans zou bieden voor de auteur om meer werk te maken. Simpel gezegd: jij kijgt geld voor je liedje en daarom maak je meer liedjes.

Hoe het nu werkt is dat er niks tijdelijks meer is aan het monopolie omdat dat elke keer wordt opgerekt ¹. De exploitatie is heel omslachtig geregeld, in Nederland door allemaal schimmige tussenliggende organisaties, of in veel gevallen ook helemaal niet geregeld (het zogenaamde Orphan works problem). En er zijn bewijzen dat het verlengen van deze termijnen geen toename van werk in kwaliteit of kwantiteit ten gevolg heeft. Uit mijn ervaring: volgens mij is er nu meer én betere muziek dan ooit tevoren.

Als je dit allemaal bekijkt vraag je je af waarom we het eigenlijk doen? En dit zijn alleen nog maar de bezwaren tegen de manier waarop we copyright nu geregeld hebben. Wat daar nog niet bij opgeteld is de culturele schade die de wetgeving aanricht omdat deze de creativiteit en innovatie van iedereen beperkt. Artiesten krijgen dat tijdelijk monopolie op hun werk waarna het hoort terug te vloeien in de collectieve cultuur. Elke verlenging van dat monopolie is diefstal van iedereen ².

Of ze het nu willen of niet, de nummers van de Beatles zijn onderdeel van die collectieve cultuur. Net zoals zij invloeden en onderdelen uit toen bestaande muziek hebben gebruikt, moet hun muziek weer inspiratie en herbruikbaar zijn voor hedendaagse creaties ³.

Over de verdedigers gesproken, ik was erg blij dat de aankomende directeur van de Koninklijke Bibliotheek aankondigde om de grenzen van het auteursrecht op te gaan zoeken omdat dit ‘een rem op de vrije informatievoorziening is’. Misschien dat mensen eerder geneigd zijn naar hem te luisteren dan naar een stel piraten, maar in de strijd voor onze cultuur is alle hulp welkom en zijn wat mij betreft alle middelen geoorloofd.

Ik ben een Hollander die met veel plezier StuBru luistert (Nederlandse radio -op Giel Beelen na- is echt bagger). De laatste tijd hapert de stream in mijn iTunes alleen regelmatig. Dat is kritiek, zonder Studio Brussel zou mijn werkdag hele andere vormen aannemen. Kunnen jullie wat meer power achter de online stream gooien?

Alleen dag in dag uit hetzelfde luisteren gaat vervelen. Juli, KT Tunstall, Wir sind Helden, Death Cab for Cutie, Calexico, Radiohead, Kanye West, The Fray; ze zijn allemaal erg tof, maar nu even genoeg gehoord. Ik probeer allemaal nieuwe CDs uit, maar indiepop, postrock, R&B, electronic funk, singer songwriters; whatever, er zitten erg weinig blijvertjes tussen.

Het is donker buiten en misschien is een ander repertoir wat meer gepast. Ik ga het de komende tijd proberen met (soms) eeuwenlange blijvertjes op mijn shuffle: Bach, Mozart, Verdi, Puccini ¹ en Shostakovich. Zolang het maar niet stil is.

Een extreem relaxte voor-Koninginnedagse zondag begonnen met een picknick in de Haagse Paleistuin. Daarna verder naar het huis voor de daadwerkelijke warming en door naar de Koninginnenach.

Te zien aan de hoeveelheid publiek vinden mensen in Delft muziek op straat erg leuk. De gemeente is geloof ik het grootste obstakel, maar een oproep aan alle muzikanten: stoor je niet aan de stadswachten en reclaim de publieke ruimte.

I had been enjoying superb audio for some years up until the standby button got up and broke. I had already lost the remote to some haphazard malfunction or other. After the Standby button broke, I had no way anymore of turning the thing on.

Opening up the thing revealed the broken foot which wasn’t hitting a contact internally anymore. One possible plan was to replace the standby button with the much less used mute button (noted on the Flickr page).

I don’t have a picture ready, but the internals of the receiver are a horrible mess of Phillips-head-screwed-together particles almost all of which have to come out to provide access to the buttons. I could have done it with a photographic trail of crumbs, but I wasn’t feeling particularly up to this task.

I called Marantz and they weren’t particularly helpful. They referred me to a defunct specialty audio shop in Delft. The other remaining specialty audioshop in delft called Audiohuis took my receiver in.

The guy there was pretty busy and so was I, so I guess my receiver stayed over there for a couple of months. Months of Macbook speaker sound in my room which isn’t horrible, but also isn’t exactly my idea of a picnic.

Finally when I asked the status of the repairs, the guy said he couldn’t do anything because the internals of the receiver were very cramped. No shit Sherlock.

That I wasn’t feeling up to taking the thing apart is one thing, but I thought the old geezer with his years of experience could pull it off blindfolded with both hands tied to his back. Apparently not.

He even could not order a replacement remote for me and referred me to yet another specialty audio shop somewhere in the Hague¹.

Long story short: I looked around online a bit. A Dutch guy was selling replacement remotes for €85 (!). Fortunately Charles Hyde & Son had the same remote for £19. Postage and handling added a tenner but it was still a lot cheaper.

So now I’ve got the Stevenote blasting through my speakers and John Mayer ripping it up like nothing else. Cool stuff.

I have seldom seen such a mess on all levels. It is very reminiscent of PHP in the lack of design, documentation and compatibility.

It has a massive GUI which serves more to obfuscate than it helps. It’s responsiveness and polish on OS X are a joke.

I’ll take JavaScript and browser quirks any day.

What are we going to do next? Some redesign work and stability on the site is still necessary. And a possible rebranding and domain name would be nice. The domain Last.TV has been registered by someone from Last.FM and if they are not doing anything with it we would like to borrow it.

Thanks to everybody for supporting us.

We even got mentioned on Emerce and on the national news site Nu.nl which prompted a rapid meltdown of my home server.

We won 1st place for design and 2nd place for technology. Manifold celebrations ensued.

Update: Put the entire thing back into working order on my Dreamhost server. This is a lot snappier overall.

Wij dachten: natuurlijk zijn we veel beter dan Microsoft dus zijn we mee gaan doen. Ons concept was om een gepersonaliseerde muziek-clip zender (prototype) te maken met videoclips de we van YouTube haalden en die je voorkeur baseerde op je Last.FM profiel.

Ondanks wat technische moeilijkheden, is het ons gelukt om een werkend prototype in elkaar te draaien. Ons concept heeft de finale gehaald. Op dat evenement moeten we het presenteren en dan mag het publiek stemmen (dmv SMS’jes) of wij het zijn die uiteindelijk gaan winnen.

Wij hebben dus zoveel mogelijk mensen van jullie nodig om er te zijn en om ons te steunen. Het evenement is dinsdag 19 december (zie Upcoming) is in het Sport Café van de TU Delft, Mekelweg 8-10 in Delft en het begint om 16.00.

Er zal gezorgd worden voor gratis bier en de hoeveelheid gratis drank zal compleet ontploffen als wij winnen.

Je kunt de boel ook uitproberen op de demosite (maar wees er een beetje lief voor). We gaan hem nog beter maken, maar dit is voor het idee.

Well we thought, of course we are better than Microsoft so we entered the competition. Our concept was to create a personalized music video station called Last.tv with videoclips pulled from YouTube based on your Last.FM music preferences.

Despite some technical difficulties, we managed to pull this off. And our concept made it to the final. On the finale event we have to present and audience voting (by means of SMS) has a big say in the final result.

So we need as many of you to be present as possible and support us. The event is Tuesday the 19th of December (see Upcoming) is in the Sport Café of TUDelft, Mekelweg 8-10 in Delft and it starts at 16.00.

Free beer will be provided and the amount of free liquor will explode if we win.

You can try it out at the demo site but please be gentle.

Volgende week iets met een bigband waarvan ik het niet zo weet. De week daarna op een beetje een ongelukkige datum (24 dec) Nicole Philoména met mooie Spaanse en Portugese sounds.

Je bent wel dubbel afgeleid van het hardlopen zelf.

2. Door het feit dat die oortjes de hele tijd uit mijn oren vallen en je ze steeds moet terugstoppen. Minder goed

Sinds mijn GSM stuk is (dat is al heel lang geleden) heb ik geen muziek meer onderweg. De mogelijkheid om de buitenwereld af te sluiten was toch wel erg fijn. Dat mis ik.

En de vorm en prijs van deze shuffle zijn zo aantrekkelijk dat ik het waard vind om mezelf blij te maken. Alleen leverbaar in een kleine 3 weken, dat is wel jammer.

Zodra hij binnen is gooi ik hem vol met Hannah Montana en loop rond met een grote glimlach.
