Some legitimate fear

This video on BoingBoing is shocking in its absurdity but hardly unexpected given the current climate. If you pay any attention around you in metropolitan areas in the UK, it is rife with ostentatious surveillance.

What I’m most afraid of is that if we get a significant bombing in the Netherlands, that will be the only excuse necessary to implement these random searches and violations of our civil liberties on Dutch soil. And the populace will swallow it wholesale supported by our MSM1.

Terrorism is nothing to be afraid of compared to the complacent fascism hidden in the average person.

Capoeira Development

A weekend with friends for me only reaches conclusion after the pictures have been edited and placed online. The process takes some time but also allows/forces me to relive it. This time the process has been further prolonged because I have to wait until somewhere next week to pick up my developed film.

It’s nice to have friends who are pushing their bounds photographically to try and improve their skill and to see them improve leaps and bounds as a result of that.

One such friend is Mony and during his yearly holiday1 to Bulgaria he has produced a very nice set of street photography out of Sofia:

For me it’s of particular interest to see pictures of a city neighboring my love Istanbul. I have just this one picture I would call a good street photography shot. The effort it takes to get even halfway decent shots is staggering.

On a different photograpic note, I’ve brought away the 120 film I shot this weekend for development. I hope the repairs on my Yashica worked out and the pictures are in focus. Shooting manual metered medium format film is a very different experience and pace than I’m used to from my 350D and something I could very well get used to. The digital set is still being edited and should go (partly) up tonight.

Coworker.nl — Map of coworking spots in the Netherlands

Some ideas start out small and then grow larger than you thought imaginable. Coworker.nl is one such idea. This is a write up about how it came to be and how you can build your own.

As a wandering free agent, you end up in strange places and if you’re stuck somewhere, it could be useful to get some work done in the neighborhood. I was not the only person with this problem and I couldn’t find a good WiFi map either, so I thought we could start something up.

A conversation about coworking on Jaiku quickly turned into the idea to gather those locations onto a Google Map and see if we could make that work. So talking back and forth a bit, I made a custom Google Map and invited people to add their offices with drop-in coworking spaces on it. This took off a bit and we had a functioning coworking map of cool companies and startups in the Netherlands willing to host a nomadic worker. Robert had the domain coworker.nl lying around and he pasted the code for the map on that domain and Coworker.nl was born.

After some time, other people also started to add coffee shops with WiFi with a coffee cup icon and a public utility was born.

Attention

A lot of people have seen the map by now (22’000 and counting) and I have never launched a project as small as this which got so much attention in so little time. Robert and myself didn’t have any problems getting this featured in various publications and even in a national newspaper. This says something about the immediate appeal of a simple geo-visual application and about the climate in which we launched this.

Independent web workers are seen as the vanguard of the hot Dutch new economy. Small shops, people setting up office in lunchrooms and coffee shops are seen as a ‘new’ trend. These workers also are in need of more flexible office space solutions (of which there are precious few in the Netherlands). Our map provides a handy visualization of this trend, it exactly fits a niche and appeals to people.

Values and Misconceptions

What differentiates this map from most other WiFi maps and other custom maps and geoapplications is its incredibly narrow focus based on a shared set of goals and values. The initial participants in the map all know on a near instinctive level what is meant by coworking. They understand the problem of needing a place to work and are willing to share their offices.

A lot of outsiders who find the map do not really get it and just a link to the Coworking wiki is not nearly enough to explain the shared values and history this map is built upon. Some people think we are an exchange for short-term office space, others want to sell their office space on a per day basis to make an extra buck. All interesting tangential applications of this map, and it’s nice that people are running with it, but we should stay true to the original goal.

The Tools

We should be really thankful of Google for providing these powerful and easy to use tools like Google Maps which we can use to hack something together in literally no time at all. We could have built our own database and map editor etc. but that would have taken some days if not weeks and would have greatly reduced the appeal of a small project such as this.

The fact that we could paste some minimal code to Jaiku and invite people to edit the map made all te difference. One additional step which would help in the management would be to add some kind of versioning or backup facility so if somebody accidentily deletes the entire map, I could easily restore it to a previous version.

The Data

The data is available as a KML file to anybody who wants it (feel free to take it, distributed backup is the best kind) and I think we’re willing to publish it under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike license but I would appreciate it if you let us know if you’re going to build something.

Build your own local

Because this is so simple to setup local versions have already been made (Coworking São Paulo by Michel Zappa) by others but the vision is to eventually cover the entire world both with maps and locations one country at a time, so to get this started here’s a small recipe how to set this up:

  1. Create a custom Google Map
  2. Call out to your local scene on Twitter, Jaiku and whatnot to ask if they’re interested and if they have spaces they know.
  3. Invite these people to edit your Google Map, be sure to allow them to invite others as well to help your map grow virally.
  4. Get a (short and memorable) domain and paste the embed iframe code of the Google Map onto the domain for better visibility. You can also copy our CSS and JavaScript for extra ease.
  5. Let it grow. You don’t have to go about it too agressively, in our case we built it to scratch our own itch. Any value others derive from it is a plus.

Once enough countries have their own map, we may be able to combine them all into one massive global coworking map, for those people hopping countries.

Tangents

There is some stuff which this map is not really about but wich bears talking about anyway:

The fact that the map also houses coffee shops with WiFi and a place to sit may not really be about coworking, but these are spots where you can get some work done and they show that there was no high quality WiFi wap for webworkersin the Netherlands. I expect this is the same in other countries.

Working area

There are quite some commercial spots available with meeting rooms and desks which you can lease by the day or some other period. These are not exactly in the coworking spirit, but they do serve a need, so for now we have allowed these to be on the map as well.

As I already wrote there’s a shortage of office space which you can lease flexibly. The map could be used to show policy makers and realtors in which regions of the Netherlands there’s demand for flexible office solutions and in the future we may add a vetted exchange to the map to help freelancers and small companies such as ourselves to get suitable office space.

Most of the people on the map are either free agents, people working in small companies, startups or a combination of these. So that way the map also serves as a list of interesting companies and people in the Netherlands who are active in the web scene and who have an open attitude. I think that is also a valuable thing to have for a nascent scene such as ours.

Night Store

My friendly neighborhood night store will gladly give me a plastic bag for every item of shopping I buy from them1. This is pretty thoughtful and at the same time also pretty short-sighted.
Now there seem to be some places in the world that have banned plastic bags though I’m not sure which ones. It is a pretty contentious issue. It seems to be difficult or something but it’s not exactly clear why that is. We’re one of the technically most advanced societies in the world and we can’t live without plastic bags?

I wasn’t very hungry so instead of my regular döner I got some green pistachio baklava. This stuff is so ridiculously delicious it explodes into pure sugar and pistachio in your mouth and it fills you up pretty fast. I don’t get why you would buy mass-produced candy from the supermarket. If you want to get fat, why not get fat eating good stuff?

Now if only I could find a place around here2 that sells künefe, things would get really crazy.

Evaluate

I’ve been blogging in English for a while now and while the stats show a steady amount of readers, I haven’t really had any comments on anything really.

What do you think about the switch to English? Writing English regularly at least has made me acutely aware of how much I still have to learn about the language and how much I need to develop a feel for it.

World Press

A while back we went to the World Press Photo 2008 exhibition in Utrecht with some capoeiras and looked at the pictures many of us had already seen after the first announcement.

I had prepared a bit for the day by listening to the photographers’ commentaries on their pictures. As is the case with many artists, the artist should not try to explain his art but in some cases the commentary really adds a lot to the picture.

I would recommend Platon about his portrait of Poetin, John Moore about the Bhutto assassination and Brent Stirton about the preservation of gorillas.

A World That Donates As One

Barack’s visit to Europe again makes clear how important it is to people over here who exactly is the POTUS. A lot of people in Europe are interested and invested in American politics and for good reason if you see the effect the American’s actions can have on the rest of the world.

Polls show that Europeans overwhelmingly support Barack Obama and would like to see him in office as opposed to McCain. This makes it extra annoying that our power to influence the process is severely limited. American elections are in a large part dominated by money and the raising of it. Unfortunately non-Americans are excluded from making donations. Something about foreigners not being allowed to elect the American President.

This is of course stupid. The people electing the president are still the Americans. Seeing as campaign financing has been regarded as a form of free speech, don’t people from outside the USA have the right to speak their minds on this matter? I’m sure that if Trichet would look under the sofa in his office, he could find a spare €50’000’0001 —per the wishes of the European electorate— to give Obama’s campaign that extra push.

Wireless typing

A lot of raves for the new line of Apple Keyboards also from me. Cris has been so kind to import one for me from London1.

This keyboard has improved my workplace conditions massively. It’s a pleasure to sit down at my desk and start typing on it. I’m currently pairing it with my old Logitech MX500 mouse but that is bound to go wireless as well. I may be tempted to haul the whole installation on the road but I don’t want to end up looking like this.

Package

Now I just need to find something to prop up my Macbook much much higher. I’m currently putting it on a pile of UX books, which could be a sign I need to increase my reading speed.

About the sizing issue. The Bluetooth keyboard’s size is perfect. The layout is nearly identical to my Macbook keyboard’s layout, which means I have no switching costs going back and forth. A numerical keypad I would hardly use anyway, and the six buttons above the arrows are easily replaced with the Mac key chords.

Socio-locational disconnection

I’ve been tremendously enjoying the stuff Jan Chipchase writes on his blog both current and digging deep into his archives1. A dream job if ever there was one.

His current piece is especially pertinent as the iPhone 3G release with builtin GPS and accompanied unlimited data plans will herald the location based revolution. Many of my friends say that they do not want to broadcast where they are and know where their friends are most of the time. That they would rather get together using premediated consensual communication.

I think in user research you have to adopt the same maxim that everybody lies maybe unknowingly or unwillingly. It remains to be seen how many people will not succumb to the temptation of total information. Broadcasting your location, but even more attractive knowing where your loved ones are at any given moment. The same initial reaction to mobile telephony didn’t prevent everybody I know from getting a mobile phone.

What this will do to the mystery of travel and unknown locations is a whole different question asked by Babak. I think unequality in economic, communications and political circumstances will always keep parts of the world shrouded in mystery.

Linguistic Waves

Talking about catching waves, I had been annoyed majorly by the uselessness of Safari not incorporating any decent URL shortcut function1 without either a paid for extension or a dreadful input manager hack.

Now Shaun Inman has launched a somewhat more circumspect but more cross platform way of invoking the same functionality: Shortwave. His initial list, though useful is not what I would use the functionality most for in my Saft days. So I’ve added some links to dictionaries I use a lot and some I don’t use that much: alper.nl/wave.txt

Additions for the linguist’s shortwave are most welcome. Still looking for decent French, Mandarin, Arabic and Russian dictionaries.

Pre holiday wrapping up

The summer may not have brought the best weather but still good times are around. This week finishing off some work before we’ll be going on an ill-prepared week long surftrip somewhere along the French Atlantic coast.

Seasoned travellers as we deem ourselves and busy as we are, we have dispensed with most of the preparation one would think would be necessary. We have some camping equipment, surfboards and roof carriers and lots of good humour to go around. That should be enough for any holiday.

iPhone Queue

That’s also a reason I won’t be getting my iPhone 3G right away like a lot of people are. I’m planning on travelling some more and this device is more of a hindrance1 and a risk than it is a benefit on the road.

I’m still debating whether or not I should take my laptop. Odds of us finding solid power let alone WiFi are slim and 7GB of CF memory should be enough for a week’s holiday: 1GB/day. And a week of disconnection will probably do me more good than I realize.

10th Reboot – day 2 and on

Jerry

The second day started off with a talk about Free by Jerry Michalski which reminded me a lot of the topics that I had covered the previous day in my talk. Jerry’s talk being in the main hall made this turn out a lot differently than my talk.

David

David Recordon followed with a talk about the open web and reminded us that not that much has changed in the last six months since I saw him on the same topic in Berlin. The big social conglomerates that have each other in a chokehold make for glacial progress.

Arduino Workshop

I dropped in on the Arduino workshop which was a very nice introduction into building electronic stuff. Because I was already somewhat familiar and I wanted the freedom to bounce around the conference, I hadn’t registered but I did get some questions in to further my own ideas.

Joshua’s talk proved to be one of the best of the conference —with this great quote— marred slightly by the fact that his partner could not make it for a more complete stage presence. His work and vision how technology works towards freedom is very relevant and interesting though we usually stare ourselves blind at Silicon Valley and the likes.

After the conference we made a yearly chaotic meetup somewhere in the city trying to get something to eat more or less succesfully after which we made our way to Vega. The party in the bar was quickly replaced with a party outside with tipping beers and music where everybody had a great time. Even the arrival of police could not really stop our party.

The next day I was going to get some coffee at Kafeplantagen when I remembered that some people were having a post-Reboot brunch at Pussy Galore’s Flying Circus1. I was a bit hesitant to join after having already spent two days with these people but I’m glad I went inside. I got to catch up with Chris Messina, Brynn Evans and Janetti Chon and talk about the differences between the USA and Europe.

10th Reboot – day 1

Reboot 10 is over and in my experience they simply get better every year.

I’d signed up for a session and got slotted on Thursday morning so I spent a good part of Wednesday preparing and running through the story. Of course after having gotten over my early flight and having eaten something at the Laundromat.

My session on Free Economics was filled over capacity while it was meant to be a cosy conversational session. Fortunately that also meant more than enough people willing to participate and add information, so I think it went well and it proved a good starting point for the rest of the conference. My stress relieved could follow the rest of the sessions.

There were a number of other Dutch presenters most notably: Kars, Ton, Ianus and Iskander. Unfortunately I didn’t see any of them present, but I’ll catch up on that when the video’s are posted. Being programmed against Andy Budd meant that I missed his presentation as well, but maybe I wouldn’t have fitted in the completely full small room anyway.

Thomas vander Wal

Thomas Vander Wal’s talk —always nice to have him over at this side of the ocean— gave us some great elements for social software to base our thinking on and concluded with a way to get organizations to think about the dichotomy between keeping information and sharing it.

Mandoline

It was a joy to hear music in the presentation on Tradition by Jeremy Keith. More music is usually a good idea as we would also see in the final party.

On Reboot I never can keep up going to sessions and usually it’s better not to. The interactions in the hallways and the lobby especially during the lull when there are sessions going on are more interesting on a personal level than anything else.

Lawn

The first day’s talk got concluded by a fun treatment of information by David Weinberger. During dinner it was also very interesting to get a preview of his session from Siert Wijnia about his Fablab and what the commoditization of the production process will do to product design and manufacturing.

Off to Copenhagen

By the time this post has been published I will be on a train on my way to Schiphol to fly to Copenhagen to attend the 10th edition of Reboot1.

Copenhagen has become familiar territory and I’ll be there for only four days. Acclimatizing on Wednesday which kicks off with a boat trip. Thursday and Friday will be conference days during which I hope to see a lot of people and I have been alotted a small session where we’ll talk about Free Economies.

Saturday will be spent recovering, maybe a run along the lakes or a decent brunch or burger and Saturday evening my train will depart for the Netherlands. The train journey back I’m looking forward to a lot more than the plane ride in.

Value Added

The Dutch government is thinking of increasing the VAT from its current 19% to 20% at the end of this year (source). That may seem like a lot, but for instance in Denmark I believe it stands at 25% and Denmark is a pretty nice country.

I’m curious to the rationale of such an increase of 1%. Why increase it at all? In the current political climate it will only increase perception that Jan Modaal1 is being screwed over by government. And why then not increase it directly to 25% or 50%, if it’s such a good thing?

We had an excellent summer last year surfing on and off on Scheveningen as the waves allowed. This year has been mostly flat, but we had some waves a week ago and end of this week promises some nice swell, so surf is up.

It’s nice to have a surf spot this easily accessible, but I’m curious how surfing in real waves is1. So this July we’ll be headed off to Aquitaine or Basque country for a week to check the waves over there.

Apple’s new iPhone

Today was a day of many happy occasions. The Dutch national soccer team utterly crushed the reigning world champion 3-0. And Steve Jobs held his annual WWDC address announcing a 3G iPhone for the masses.

“Twice as fast. Half the price.”Hell yeah. I will be getting me one. It’s been some two years since T-Mobile shafted me and I can’t exactly say that the other telcos in the Netherlands are worth a damn. Might as well go back for 2 years of servitude.

July 11th it is and no official price yet, but I will be queueing at the store.

Fast Portraits

Last week we had the batizado for our group with people coming in from Amsterdam, Norway, London and Portugal just to celebrate this event together. The batizado with associated parties and barbecues is a highlight of the year and this year proved to be a great amount of fun.

Traditionally the batizado ends on Sunday with a churrasco and having everybody together and mellow is a nice opportunity to shoot some pictures. For this set I took gnomo‘s Nikon with 50mm f/1.4, a splendid lens if ever there is one and I ambushed everybody for their portrait within 10 minutes.

Mooi Weer Spelen

“Mooi Weer Spelen”((Nice Weather Games)) is the title of the annual street theater festival that takes over the city center of Delft. This year, I’m living in said center and it’s much easier to see the events.

Unfortunately this year the amount of people attracted by the free street theater shows has exploded and the weather has been great so every show is completely packed and it’s nearly impossible to watch it let alone take any decent pictures.

So here are a couple of pictures of the mobile acts:

Code Switching

Het is tegenover mijn potentiele internationale publiek niet echt eerlijk om Nederlands te schrijven, terwijl ik het Engels bijna net zo goed beheers.

Het Nederlandse taalgebied is me te klein en alle Nederlanders die er toe doen spreken prima Engels. Dus in de toekomst misschien af en toe nog een Nederlands stukje hier, maar het merendeel in het Engels.

Protesten mogen —in om het even welke taal— in de commentaren en zullen in overweging genomen worden.

Clinic Middag

Volgende vrijdag houden we hier op kantoor een unconference-achtige workshop (beschrijving) middag om kennis uit te wisselen. Iedereen vertelt of laat iets zien wat hij kan ter lering ende vermaek van de anderen, dit mag alles zijn. Nu wilden we het aanvankelijk doen met ons vieren, maar het leek ons nog leuker om het open te stellen voor onze vrienden en kennissen.

We denken aan interactieve sessies van ongeveer een half uur van 1:30 tot einde van de dag afgesloten met borrel en barbecue. Leuk en gezellig, kom je ook?

Arduino Diecimila projectje

Het is al een tijdje geek-chique om te zeggen dat Arduino’s cool zijn en te wensen dat je de tijd had om ermee te spelen. Dat vond ik wat vrijblijvend worden, dus ik heb maar een starters-setje besteld.

Multi LED setup

Het idee is dat dit een simpel uitbreidbaar bord met processor is waar je een programma op kunt laden waarna dat zelfstandig kan draaien en de in- en uitvoer kan aansturen. Je kunt er allerlei dingen op aansluiten en een Arduino kan ook communiceren met andere Arduini of de server1.

Wat doe je hier dan mee? Afgelopen week hield Adam Greenfield zijn presentatie op The Web and Beyond over de intelligente stad, en dat is één van de dingen die je hiermee kunt bouwen op kleine schaal. Het voorlopige idee is om op kantoor sensoren en/of displays te maken om de duizenden forensen die per dag passeren op de hoogte te brengen van iets.

Dat zou bijvoorbeeld de vertrektijd van de volgende trein kunnen zijn, of de actuele vervuiling op het moment2. Het gaat er een beetje om wat goedkoop meetbaar en wat goedkoop weergeefbaar is.

Fiesta Brasileira!

Het is weer zover! Het jaarlijkse vetste Braziliaanse feest in de grootste disco van Delft komt er weer aan. Vorig jaar was het al een bijzonder geslaagde editie met een vol huis en adembenemende capoeira en afro-brazil acts, dit jaar belooft minstens net zo cool te worden.

De wereld is kapot

Maar ik heb er grondige vertrouwen in dat we hem kunnen repareren.

Ik zit nu in Londen1 bij @mseckington en @cbetta op de bank na een dagje conferentie bij geekyoto waar een hele serie mensen hun visie hebben gegeven de toestand van de wereld en hoe die te repareren. Erg inspirerend en er zijn veel mensen met goede dingen bezig.

Ik ga nog meer schrijven maar feit is dat veel van de oplossingen geen extra techniek nodig hebben en ook niet meer kosten. Het enige wat de boel tegenhoudt is menselijke inertie.

Nu wat eten, morgenochtend kijken of ik een capoeirales kan volgen en morgenmiddag terugtreinen naar Nederland.

Wat je zaait

Druk en weinig bloggerij de laatste tijd. Daar komt wel weer verandering in, al weet ik niet of ik moet blijven bloggen in het Nederlands. Ik schat dat de meeste lezers van dit stukje toch ook wel Engels kunnen lezen en dat ik ondertussen goed genoeg Engels schrijf dat het niet storend is.

Een onderzoek van het Nationaal Comité 4 en 5 mei gaf terug dat mensen in Nederland het bezorgst zijn om terroristische aanslagen. Is het kabinet1 er toch in geslaagd om mensen bang te maken voor de grote boeman van het terrorisme.

Om daar tegenover een onderzoek te zetten wat Bruce Schneier aanhaalde over waar je je echt zorgen over moet maken, namelijk mensen die dicht bij je staan, auto’s en fast food. Het is veel waarschijnlijker je daardoor wat overkomt dan dat je omkomt bij een terroristische aanslag.
Mensen zijn niet goed in het inschatten van risico’s. Denk ook aan die ouders die panisch worden bij alles wat hun kind online doet, maar ze wel gewoon naar de scouting en de kerk sturen. Want daar gebeurt niks.

Microblogging als manier van communicatie

Vandaag op Frankwatching een artikel gepubliceerd waar ik al een tijdje aan aan het werk was: Microblogging als communicatiemedium

Hier nog even de tekst integraal voor mijn eigen archief. Maar lezen en reageren doe je bij Frank.

Bijna iedereen heeft ondertussen wel van Twitter gehoord. Onlangs is Jaiku, een tegenhanger van Twitter, overgenomen door Google. De manie, de verslaving en de behoefte van mensen om te uiten wat ze aan het doen zijn, zijn uitingen van het fenomeen microblogging waar mobiel en presence bij elkaar komen.

Robert Scoble en anderen noemen het een vervanger van e-mail maar dat lijkt me wat overgehyped. Ondertussen is wel duidelijk dat microblogging op verschillende plaatsen terugkomt en zijn invloed heeft in andere diensten. Het is een blijvertje, maar wat moeten we er dan mee?

Microbloggen is het overbrengen van een kleine boodschap via SMS, web, IM, mobiele clienten of desktop tools en widgets. Dit is redelijk divers, hieronder een blik op Twitter en Jaiku en hun invloed op het (mobiele) web.

Twitter

Twitter is een beetje de eerste echt grote microblogging site en op dit moment ook de dominante. Anderhalf jaar geleden in Amerika begonnen als spinoff van Odeo, leek het een leuk klein dienstje. Destijds had ik moeite om vrienden hier in Nederland eraan te krijgen. In de tussentijd is Twitter uitgegroeid tot een van de meestgenoemde sites op het internet.

Het concept is erg simpel: Je tikt een boodschap op de website of verstuurt het door middel van SMS of plaatst het via de API. Deze boodschap is een kleine status update oftewel een “microblog”en deze wordt geplaatst op het internet, doorgestuurd via SMS of IM aan mensen die je volgen en is opvraagbaar voor andere programma’s via een API.

Op een gegeven moment explodeerde in Amerika de populariteit van Twitter en de site lag er om de haverklap uit. Het feit dat Twitter plat lag, was een running gag, maar de problemen met Ruby en de schaalbaarheid ervan lijken opgelost te zijn.

Pas is Biz Stone op de eDay geweest om te spreken over Twitter en hun succes (zie verslag op Marketingfacts). Het is leuk om de dingen uit de mond van de maker te horen, maar veel nieuws wist hij niet te melden. De toepassingen en de creatieve uitingsvormen die bovenop Twitter gebouwd worden zijn uit zijn handen gegroeid. Twitter is de enabler voor ontzettend veel andere diensten.

Het is onduidelijk waar Twitter zijn geld aan verdient. De kosten van servers en (SMS) bandbreedte moeten ergens door betaald worden. Twitter heeft pas een financieringsronde van $5M gekregen.

Over Twitter is hier en op andere plaatsen al heel veel geschreven. Ik ben zelf nooit een actief gebruiker van Twitter geweest en vindt dat er interessantere trends zijn in dit domein. Hier ga ik het dan ook over hebben, beginnende met Jaiku.

Jaiku

Jaiku is ook een microblogging dienst, maar het is tegelijkertijd veel meer dan dat. Het lijkt er bijna op alsof microblogging een lokkertje is om te laten zien dat er nog veel meer mogelijk is.

Naast het instellen van berichtjes is het mogelijk om andere stukjes van je online leven bijeen te brengen op je Jaiku pagina. Dus invoer van Twitter, Last.FM, Plazes, Dopplr, Flickr, je weblogs en andere RSS feeds wordt door je normale berichten heen geweven om een completer beeld van jou te krijgen.
Verder is het mogelijk om op de berichten en alle andere stukken content commentaar toe te voegen, wat zorgt voor een veel rijkere interactie dan de losse berichten stroom met reacties van Twitter. Ook heeft Jaiku de mogelijkheid om kanalen te openen die vooralsnog niet veel gebruikt wordt maar het beste te vergelijken is met een soort mobiel online IRC.

Jaiku Mobile App

Verder is één van de bijzonderste features van Jaiku de mobiele client die draait op S60 GSM’s van Nokia. Deze client vervangt het normale adresboek en laat voor je vrienden die ook Jaiku gebruiken tegelijkertijd zien wat hun laatste update is, hun huidige status en locatie en hun volgende afspraak. De keuze voor het Nokia-platform beperkt de markt voor deze functionaliteit, maar dit soort geavanceerde toepassingen zijn een voorproefje van wat we kunnen verwachten zodra ontwikkelen op mobiel makkelijk on open wordt.

Deze week is Jaiku door Google gekocht voor een niet nader te noemen bedrag. Het team van Jaiku verhuist naar San Francisco om daar verder te werken aan Jaiku en de integratie met de diensten van Google. Of Jaiku nu een bijdrage gaat leveren aan de sociale netwerken explosie die Google heeft aangekondigd, of dat de Jaiku mobiele client een integraal onderdeel gaat vormen van de aangekondigde GPhone, het belooft veel voor de toekomst.

Mobiele presence is meer dan microblogging

Wat maakt microblogging sites nu zo boeiend? Jyri Engeström (Jaiku pagina) een van de oprichters van Jaiku heeft al vaak gesproken over de noodzaak van een dienst als Jaiku en van de daadwerkelijke voordelen die microblogging biedt boven andere vormen van communicatie. In zijn presentatie op Reboot8 vorig jaar getiteld “Blind Men’s Baseball” zette hij de problemen waar we allemaal mee te maken hebben uiteen. We bellen mensen meestal op met vragen als ‘Waar ben je?’, ‘Wat doe je?’ en ‘Waar ga je heen?’. Dit zijn precies de vragen waar de mobiele client van Jaiku in een oogopslag een antwoord op geeft. Jaiku biedt dus ‘social peripheral vision’ waarmee je beter op de hoogte blijft van wat je vrienden aan het doen zijn ongeacht waar ze zich bevinden.

Pas op Reboot9 en op verschillende andere plaatsen hield hij een presentatie over wat microbloggen nu echt voor voordelen biedt boven het oude bloggen. Dit zijn onder andere gemak, onmiddelijkheid en context. Het is gemakkelijker om een microblog te schrijven dan om een blog artikel (zoals dit). Het is een enkel tekstveld en er hoeft niet eens een ontvanger aangemerkt te worden, hierdoor zijn er minder bewuste handelingen nodig om te microbloggen.

Dat is microbloggen als uitingsvorm, maar Jaiku kan ook al een toegevoegde waarde bieden zonder dat de genoemde persoon ooit een bericht tikt. Doordat veel informatie automatisch door de client wordt doorgegeven, kun je zien dat iemand ‘er is’. Engeström gaf als voorbeeld zijn eigen vader bij wie hij de client had geïnstalleerd, die nooit een update plaatste maar door zijn mobiele presence toch wel in het oog en dus in het hart bleef.

De onmiddelijkheid en het gemak van microblogging met hun interruptieve aard dragen bij aan de snelheid van onze communicatie en interactie. Als je op een paar manier op de hoogte wordt gehouden van Tweets en Jaikus word je continu gestoord (letterlijk en figuurlijk). Deze storingen kunnen je concentratie compleet onderuit halen maar de informatie en verbindingen met anderen kunnen ook leiden tot waarde en kansen die je anders niet had gehad.
Stowe Boyd en James Governor zien het positieve ervan in: “If Markets are conversations, then Twitter is money” terwijl Kathy Sierra het standpunt van de cultuurpessimiste inneemt: “Is Twitter TOO good?”

Concurrentie?

Internationaal zijn er door het succes van Twitter een heleboel applicaties ontstaan die ofwel een directe kopie zijn ofwel microblogging integreren in het geheel (lijst). Pownce is een bestandendeel en berichtenapplicatie van Kevin “Digg!”Rose en Leah Culver. Plazes heeft een relaunch gedaan van de dienst waar ze aan hun ‘rich geo-presence’ functionaliteit, de mogelijkheid hebben toegevoegd om activiteiten te koppelen aan locaties: Ik ben ergens en ik doe iets. En Loic LeMeur heeft pas Seesmic gelanceerd, een video-microblogging site.

Al deze diensten maken het er niet gemakkelijker op voor gebruikers om berichten te plaatsen en bij te houden wie waar iets heeft geschreven. Microblogging zou het juist makkelijker moeten maken om op de hoogte blijven. De APIs die deze sites aanbieden maken het gelukkig mogelijk om verschillende sites weer uit te lezen en met een druk op de knop naar meerdere sites tegelijkertijd te posten. Twitku is een voorbeeld van de combinatie van Twitter en Jaiku en

In Nederland zijn er ook wat directe kopieën maar deze lijden een schrijnend bestaan. KWID, Numpa en Zezz (speelprojectje van mezelf) zijn een paar voorbeelden. Sommige sites zijn wel bereid om via een SMS-nummer microblogs te ontvangen en te plaatsen (evt. tegen betaling) maar het uitsturen van updates over SMS is niet betaalbaar aan te bieden in Nederland vanwege de redelijk gesloten telecommarkt.
Op eDay E Factor werd een whitelabel microblogging platform gepresenteerd onder de naam Brandlog maar de presentatie (slides, video) was niet overtuigend en de cijfers die genoemd werden lieten zien dat een dergelijk concept grote moeite zal hebben om winstgevend te worden.

Het is voor grote mediapartijen ook niet verstandig om alles per se zelf te willen doen. Twitter en Jaiku bieden met hun APIs en rijke ecosystemen genoeg ruimte voor andere toepassingen en weinig aanleiding om het buiten die dienst te zoeken. Het multi-channel reportage project van Ben Hammersley voor de BBC “Turkish Journey”, bewijst dat je door best breed oplossingen (Twitter, YouTube etc.) te combineren, tot mooie synergie kunt komen.

Toekomst

Het samenbrengen van je online aanwezigheid op één plek wordt een belangrijk thema in de sociale netwerken van de toekomst. Google en Yahoo! hebben dit al ingezien en zijn bezig met de eerste prototypen van de volgende generatie sociale netwerken. Yahoo! Mash is nu bijvoorbeeld in gesloten bèta en Google heeft aangekondigd om op 5 november een groot deel van hun diensten en sociale connecties vrij te geven.

Het internet blijft veranderen, en media zijn nu sneller dan ooit. Er ontstaan eigenlijk alleen maar meer vragen. Wat zal de toekomst brengen en zijn er harde grenzen aan hoe snel we kunnen communiceren, hoeveel informatie we tot ons kunnen nemen en met hoeveel mensen we in verbinding kunnen staan?

Alper Çugun —hoofdredacteur van Four Starters— denkt na over webapplicaties, maakt ze en waakt over hun relevantie en bruikbaarheid onder andere bij Tipit.to.

Marktfalen in de telecom

Berichtje in de Parool van iets wat natuurlijk al veel langer bekend is. Als je dataverkeer verbruikt in het buitenland dan betaal je je compleet scheel aan roaming mobiele data rates. En je hoeft er niet eens voor naar het buitenland1.

Dit is een duidelijk geval van marktfalen, maar wat te doen? Een maximumprijs instellen op deze diensten werkt niet, omdat er dan wordt onder-geïnvesteerd zoals op de energiemarkt van Californië. Nutsificeren zou tof zijn maar de animo daarvoor2 is ontzettend laag.

Marktfalen treedt meestal op juist door de inmenging van de overheid. Er zijn veel zogenaamd vrij markten waarvan er bijna geen een echt vrij is. Draadloos breedband werkt voor geen meter omdat de overheid wholesale monopolies heeft verkocht op de frequenties en daarin kan een operator compleet zijn eigen gang gaan. Monopolies zijn niet tof.

In Amerika heeft Google zich voor de veiling van de 700MHz-spectrum garant gesteld voor de reserveprijs van $4.6 miljard dollar als de spectrumovereenkomst aan een handjevol eisen wat betreft openheid zou voldoen. Dat is half gelukt en Cringely3 had er al zijn bedenkingen bij.
Monopolies uitdelen is een slecht plan, open monopolies uitdelen klinkt al een stuk beter. Dat is misschien ook een idee voor hier maar beter nog, waarom zijn er überhaupt frequentievergunningen nodig? Waarom mag niet iedereen zijn gang gaan? Het zal in het beginnen vast wel een zooitje worden maar met wat duwen in de goede richting4 kan er vast wel een emergente orde worden gewonnen.

Ik ben niet echt een expert op dit onderwerp, maar mijn gevoel voor logica spreekt gewoon tegen monopolies van welke soort dan ook. Experts die hier iets over kwijt willen?

Plannen van de zomer

Ik moest afgelopen week studeren voor mijn laatste tentamen deze woensdag1 dus toen ging ik als vanzelf andere dingen doen.

Plannen maken voor van de zomer is bijvoorbeeld een leuk tijdverdrijf, bijvoorbeeld alle dingen die ik wil doen op een rijtje. zetten en zien waar er gaten vallen om veel te werken of op vakantie te gaan. Toen een beetje gezocht op low-cost airlines om te zien wat er mogelijk is in die gaten.

Vandaar ook deze Jaiku. Ik heb Turkije ondertussen wel genoeg gezien, maar het is een prima uitvalsbasis om de omliggende landen te bekijken en dan gaat mijn interesse niet uit naar de Europese kant.

Mijn moeder flipte bij het idee, maar hoe meer ik erover lees hoe veiliger, leuker en bijzonderder een reisbestemming Syrië me lijkt. Naar verluid buitengewoon vriendelijke mensen, ontzettend veel historische dingen te bekijken, geen massatoerisme en een kans om wat Arabisch in het wild te horen.

Ik word bij reisbestemmingen wel beïnvloed of er al mensen heen zijn geweest die ik ken. Georgië zou eventueel ook kunnen, maar het is redelijk ver weg en ik ken al mensen die daar geweest zijn.
